To put it bluntly, it seems so many men in Liberia are becoming crazy, senseless, irrational, heartless and brazenly wicked to rape women, girls, and even boys and babies, using many spiteful and unimaginable methods to carry out their shenanigans.
Few days ago, a 28-year old man, Timothy Clarke, admitted to sodomizing a 7-year old child and told police investigators in Weala, Margibi County that he carried out the act against the innocent child because he (Timothy) has not had any female sexual partner for about 7 years now.
In other words, Timothy, who is a former private security personnel narrated to police that he sodomized the boy aimed at satisfying his strong and desperate desire for sex.
As if Timothy’s arrest for prosecution and his confessed criminal action was not enough to serve as a deterrence to others, a 41-year old man, identified as Abraham Alex, has been apprehended by the Liberia National Police (LNP), on allegation of raping his 21-year old niece in the Du-Port Road Community in Paynesville.
On February 11, 2022, the survivor reported the case to the Women and Children Protection Section of the Liberia National Police (LNP), at the Zone Five Police Station, alleging that she was raped by her Uncle, Abraham Alex.
According to the survivor’s account, on February 10, 2022, she was called by her Uncle Abraham Alex, to his Du-Port Road residence, to pick up a cellphone which he allegedly promised her.
The victim further told police investigators that while she was at the House of the accused, she was requested by Alex to clean the house, which she did and later, she went to take a bath. By then, the survivor further narrated to LNP investigators that Defendant Alex went out of the house.
He later returned with an open energy drink and gave it to her; after she drank the energy drink, she became weak and sleepy.
According to Police charge sheet quoted by the media, the survivor disclosed that she was given US$70.00 (seventy dollars) and LD$100. And he (Uncle Alex) asked her to go rest in the guest room of his house.
When she woke up, she realized that no shirt was on her while her trousers’ zipper was opened. Additionally, she felt pains in her private parts.
She further narrated that when she came out of the house, her Uncle Abraham Alex was not around and so she closed the door and went home.
According to the Police, the survivor’s medical report from the Du-Port Road Health Center, date February 12, 2022, confirmed that the survivor’s private parts were seen swollen, and reddish with fresh lacerations and bruises sustained due to due application of a blunt object.
The police investigation also established that the survivor was asleep or unconscious at the time of the act allegedly committed by the Uncle.
Indeed, the two above separate and distinct incidents are just a tip of the iceberg as it relates to the increasing acts of gender and sexual violence being committed against Liberian women, girls, boys and children almost across the country. The situation makes us to wonders as to whether Liberian men are practically ‘Going Crazy’ for Rape?
In nowadays Liberia, some as young as two or three-year old babies and above are reported to have been raped or sexually molested by marauding heartless men.
Moreover, in recent years, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, have been cataloging the somewhat snowballing numbers of acts of rape, including other Sexual and Gender-Based Violent activities being carried out against women and children by mostly evil-minded men.
What is saddening is that little or nothing is being done as a government and people to effectively address this obnoxious and ugly situation for which more heartless, callous, and cruel men are being attracted to the commission of such crimes.
This is why, we, at THE INDEPENDET are challenging the Government of Liberia, headed by President George Manneh Weah, who is also Feminist-In-Chief to collaborate with other concerned ministries and agencies, women groups, and other civil society institutions among others for the setting up of a court to fast-track investigation and prosecution of SGBV cases around the country so that the laws of the country will beat sense into the minds of those crazy men who take pleasure in inflicting sexual pains into women and girls.
