US$54m Overpass Bridges Insight Soon

MONROVIA: The Government of Liberia (GOL), through the Ministry of Public Works, as well as Ministry of Finance and Development Planning on Thursday, September 15, 2022 launched the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) Compensation Exercise for Project Affected Persons (PAPs), as the construction of the two Overpass Bridges comes alive this October.

It is estimated that 34 structures and 39,084.71 square feet (1.01 acres) of privately owned land will be directly impacted by the Project within the vicinity of the Ministerial Complex in Oldest Congo Town, outside Monrovia, while 9 structures and 4,965.84 square feet of privately owned land will be directly impacted by the Project at the SKD Boulevard Junction in Congo Town.

According to Public Works Minister, Ruth Coker-Collins, who launched the compensation exercise, the total amount for the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) is US$1,002,659.63, and it is solely funded by the Government of Liberia.

In August 2018, the Government of Liberia signed a US$54Million Grant Agreement with the Chinese Government for the construction of two overpass interchange bridges at the Ministerial Complex and SKD Boulevard Junction aimed at easing the traffic congestions along those corridors.

In separate remarks, the Acting Deputy Minister for Technical Services and the Deputy Minister for Administration, Dave T. Sleweon and Joseph P. Todd respectively lauded the Chinese Government for the gesture, noting that the Government of Liberia remains committed to improving the Infrastructural Sector of the country.

For her part, Musu Doe speaking on behalf of the Project Affected Persons thanked the Government of Liberia for the Project.

Madam Doe said while relocating to another homes can be discomforting, development normally comes with pains.
