Men Top Women In New Census …As Liberia’s Population Hits 5.2 Million

MONROVIA: The Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, released its 2022 Liberia National Population and Housing Census Provisional result, indicating that the new population of Liberia now stands at 5.2 million.

The report stated that the population growth rate of Liberia is 3.0 while the household size is 4.4 percent.
Reading the results at a ceremony held at the Monrovia City Hall, Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor, described the 2022 Liberia National Population and Housing Census as Liberia’s first digital Census.
She said LIGIS used state-of-the-art geo-spatial, census monitoring dashboard and Computer Aided Person Interview (CAPI) technology in all aspects of its implementation.

According to her, as a comprehensive digital census, it leveraged the available technology to improve operational efficiency and enhance the quality of the data collected.
The Vice President indicated that, about 16,562 Enumerators and Supervisors visited households nationwide, counted and collected detailed information on nearly all persons that spent the Census night from November 10, 2022 in their respective households.

She stated that the actual Census enumeration was conducted from November 14th to 20th to December 2022 with a mop-up exercise from 27th January 2023.

Vice President Howard Taylor noted that, the completeness of the 2022 Liberia National Population and Housing Census is rank at 97 percent, something she said, is an international acceptable achievement.
She said the overall male population makes up 50.4 percent (2,644,450) of the people and the female population accounts for 49.6(2,604,171), giving a national sex ratio of 101.5 males for every 100 females.
She emphasized that, 1,187,388 households were enumerated with an average national household size of 4.4 persons while the national density is 140 persons per square mile and the rural population accounts for 48 percent, while the urban constitute 52 percent.
She said, Montserrado County accounts for 37 percent of the total population enumerated, followed by Nimba County 12 percent, Bong County 9 percent and Lofa County 7th percent.
She said these four counties constitute nearly two-third (65percent) of Liberia’s total population.
She pointed out that, River Cess County accounts for 1.7percent; Gbarpolu County 1.8 percent account for less than four percent of the population followed by Gran Kru County 2.1 percent and River Gee 2.4 percent.
She stressed that, the 2022 Liberia’s National Population and Housing Census instituted several data quality monitoring mechanisms and leveraged technology to implement interventions toward ensuring a complete and accurate Census.
Vice President Taylor said, these include using modern geo-spatial mapping techniques, geocoding building/structure footprints, Computer-Aided Personal Interview (CAPI) techniques using tablets, state –of-the art near real time data capture via cloud data, date transmission dynamically, updated census dashboard for real time monitoring and continuous data validation at various levels of operation.
According to her, these strategies enabled preempting operation/logistic challenges motely monitoring and reporting fieldwork progress, assessing data quality and correcting errors and inconsistences while enumerators were still in the field.
The Liberia’s Vice President used the occasion, on behalf of the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS), and the government of Liberia to express her appreciation to all Census Committee, Census Officials, Field Staffs, Partners, the Media stakeholders as well as the general public who participated in the Census.

She said LISGIS looks forward to continued engagement during the dissemination phase of this critical National project.
During the first Post-war National Population and Housing Census conducted by LISGIS in March 2008, the country population stood at 3,489,072. In the 2008 LISGIS report, male accounted for 1,764,555, while females amounted to 1,724,517; T.R Dixon writes.
