MONROVIA: Justice Minister Frank Musah Dean has mandated the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Col. Patrick Sudue, to conduct a thorough investigation into the standoff that happened on the Capitol Hill campus of the University of Liberia on Monday, March 13, 2023.
An Information Ministry statement, signed by Minister Ledgerhood J. Rennie disclosed that Justice Minister Dean has mandated the Police Inspector General (IG), Col Patrick Sudue, to file a report to his office in the “soonest” following his inquest into the violent incident, which led to injuries and the destruction of properties.
According to the MICAT release, “The melee occurred amongst rival student supporters of two Liberian lawmakers.”
Although MICAT, in its release, did not name the two Liberian Lawmakers, but public comments via social media highlighted the alleged involvement of two of Montserrado County’s incumbent Lawmakers, Acarous Moses Gray, and Yekeh Kolubah along with several abled-body individuals believed to be their respective foot-soldiers.
Both Lawmakers were seen on the UL main campus of the University of Liberia during the melee, which also led to indefinite suspension of student politics on all UL campuses.
The Government has however reiterated that while it is committed to protecting fundamental rights- including freedom of expression and assembly, it will not tolerate violence of any kind.
Meanwhile, some members of the public are wondering as to whether or not Lawmakers, Gray and Yekeh would submit themselves to the LNP probe of the UL violence.
