MONROVIA: Grand Bassa County Senator and Political Leader of Liberty Party, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, is off to Washington, DC, USA, at the invitation of the House Democracy Partnership (HDP) to participate in the Legislative Track of the Summit for Democracy.
A press release from the Senator’s office said the House Democracy Partnership is a joint effort of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI). This year’s summit is a sequel to the 2021 gathering of approximately 100 governments that supported over 750 communities to advance democracy, fight corruption, counter authoritarianism and promote human rights.
The event which runs from March 28-30, will bring together Legislators from the US Congress and others from across the globe and will discuss democratic renewal, drawing into focus the critical role legislators play.
Essentially, the release said, the Summit will highlight how democracies deliver for their citizens by supporting free speech and independent media.
Senator Karngar-Lawrence is one of few Liberian Lawmakers endeavoring to uphold democratic values and the promotion of the rule of law. The LP leader is expected to be away for two weeks.
In addition to her participation in the Legislative Track of the Summit for Democracy, the LP Political Leader will be engaging in series of side meetings arranged by a local PR Team headed by Liberian Andrea Kamara-Dunbar.
From Washington DC, the Grand Bassa Senator will travel to the state of Maryland where she is expected to meet with Maryland Secretary of State, Susan C. Lee, experts from the Department of Agriculture, The Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation, and the Howard County Chamber of Commerce.
The focus of these meetings is to re-establish the Sister State agreement between Liberia and the state of Maryland, with particular attention on discussing agriculture, youth empowerment, and health services. Senator Karngar-Lawrence’s aim is to empower the people of Grand Bassa County and Liberia at large by leveraging these conversations with key stakeholders.
