MONROVIA: Minister of State without Portfolio and head of the President Delivery Unit (PDU), Mr. Tronkon Kpui, has disclosed that the Liberian Government has finalized arrangement to begin the construction of a recreation park in Logan Town and New Kru Town on the Bushrod Island in Monrovia.
He said President George Manneh Weah is of the opinion that the country lacks sufficient recreational facilities and has, therefore, decided to embark on this initiative to construct additional facilities in New Kru Town and Logan Town.
He this in addition to the Invisible Park, Clara Town recreational, the WestPoint recreational and the PHP recreation park currently under construction.
He made the statement Thursday, June 15, 2023 at the Ministry of Information Cultural and Tourism (MICAT) at its regular weekly press Conference held at its Conference Room on Capitol Hill, In Monrovia.
He said the PHP recreation park construction work which is 86 percent complete contain “a full outdoor gym, a children’s playground, two football fields, two basketball courts, and two volleyball courts, as well as a boardwalk.”
Mr. Kpui, said the park also contain restaurants, a grandstand, a souvenir shop, a National Unity Monument, an administrative building, car parks, and adequate sanitary and security facilities.
He said Funding for the project is being provided by the United Arab Emirates, through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), and the Government of Liberia.
He pointed out that, it is a dividend of Liberia’s bilateral ties with the UAE and a request made by President Weah during his visit to the Middle Eastern country in 2019.
“I proposed the concept of a sports and recreational facility to be built in Monrovia along one of our famous beach communities – PHP Community.
He said the PHP community not only has a strong history of producing great athletes, but is also a historical place which reminds us all of the importance of peace and unity.
“This project was one of the first to be approved, although delayed by the COVID pandemic and the tendering process; it will be sponsored almost entirely by resources provided by the Government of the UAE through the Abu Dhabi Fund.
PHP is one of the communities of the President’s childhood and it has also been his dream to give back to his past communities.
He then reiterated his appeal to Communities where the recreation Park will be or has been constructed to take ownership of the park as it will provide “a wholesome and healthy environment for our youths, as well as adults and older citizens, to interact with each other in well-maintained, safe, and professional premises.
He noted that, it is providing useful employment opportunities for deserving Liberians, while giving a much-needed facelift to our capital city, Monrovia and specifically the surrounding areas of PHP, BTC Barclay Training Center) and other communities.
