In Montserrado County: CDC’s District Two Primary Backfires …Rep. Jimmy Smith Pulls Out; Links Leadership to Betrayal

MONROVIA: Representative Jimmy W. Smith has accused officials of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), for undermining his re-election by fielding candidate against him which saw his defeat in the just ended CDC primary in District# 2, Montserrado County.

The incumbent District# 2 Lawmaker was massively defeated by Kokolo Borvo, who obtained 382 votes with Rep. Smith obtaining 21 from a total of 450 delegate votes cast, during the CDC primary held in the District over the weekend.

The 450 delegates were selected from the nine constituent political parties of the ruling Grand-Coalition.

The CDC Lawmaker immediately following his defeat suspended his membership from the party, citing gross disrespect to previous agreement inked between CDC Lawmakers and the party hierarchies for incumbent lawmakers’ seats to be uncontested in the event where the party goes for primary.

“The primary reason for the suspension of my membership with the party is the betrayal of the agreement between the standard bearer, the CDC Legislative Caucus and the party.
“ It was agreed upon that all seated CDC lawmakers would have been a consensus candidate/white ballot as a reciprocation of the endorsement for the president on February 4, 2023.

“ Said agreement was reemphasized on June 13, 2023, at the Party’s headquarters,” Representative Smith’s letter sent to CDC Chairman, Mulbah K. Morlu, indicated.

He repudiated any bridge of the party’s mandate after he dedicated to promoting the values and principles of the CDC, but his “unconditional defeat” to Borvo convinced him that his continue association with the ruling CDC party is no longer tenable.

Representative Smith: “The Party’s recent actions have been deeply disappointing and have eroded my faith to participate in its activities. The perennial power struggles, internal conflicts/bad block towards me, and disregard for constructive dialogue have undermined the very essence of democracy that our party claims to champion.”

The Lawmaker accused the ruling CDC for its inability to address alleged perpetual conflict within his district, coupled with a very high level of “deceitfulness and intransigent behaviors” on the part of some senior partisans in the name of politics, which he said, further alienated him.
“The inconsistency and double standards in handling party issues, the disregard for evidence-based decision-making, and the prioritization of short-term gains over long-term solutions for a fair, just, and inclusive society can no longer align with the party’s agenda,” he averred.
CDC National Chairman, Mulbah K. Morlu Jr. could not be immediately reached for comment in reaction to Representative Smith’s accusations against the ruling party.

However, in 2021, Youth League of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) accused Representative Smith of sponsoring Joe Tarnue, a Public Relations Officer to him (Lawmaker), to stage protest against President George Manneh Weah and the CDC government for the party’s failure to prioritize and create opportunities for CDCians.

Tarnue, who is currently Secretary General of the CDC District 2 Youth League, then threatened to make the headquarters of the CDC uncomfortable for President Weah if their demands for jobs, scholarships, etc., were not met.

The Tarnue’s group was then resisted by the CDC Youth League and described their then actions as calculated attempt to undermine many gains made by the President and his government.

Then, the Youth League accused Rep. Smith for being the main perpetrator behind Joe and his group’s action, saying “Representative Jimmy Smith you are hiding your hands behind partisan Joe Tarnue for your selfish gains over the interest of the party and Liberians. But, in reaction, then, Rep. Smith distanced himself from the allegation and said Joe Tarnue was responsible for his action.
