Over the weekend, local media report indicated that two senior officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP), assigned in Ganta, Nimba County, are currently undergoing investigation in Monrovia for allegedly receiving US$5,000 from a murder suspect who was allowed to abscond from Liberia.
According to the report, LNP Commander Jenkins N. Mangou and his Principal Deputy, Alexander Franklin, are currently in Monrovia undergoing investigation by the Liberia National Police (LNP) in connection to claim that both LNP Commanders were bribed with a whopping US$5,000 by a Sierra Leonean, identified as Abraham Mohammed, and allowed him to escape from Liberia after Mohammed allegedly killed the mother of his two children.
According to the report, Mohammed escaped from Liberia with his two children.
The lifeless body of the woman, believed to be in her early 40s, and identified as Oretha Korwood, was discovered in a local guest house situated in the Pearson Community in Ganta, Nimba County, in early May, 2023.
It is alleged that the murder victim, Oretha Korwood, hails from Gbeyi-Guawin Town in Nimba County District 9.
Her Lifeless body was discovered in a guest house room and that suspect Mohammed allegedly used a generator rope and other weapons to murder Oretha.
For us, at The Investigative INDEPENDENT, we are very much shocked, shaken, stunned, and troubled by the latest report that a murder suspect had been allowed to run from justice allegedly at the behest of two senior commanders of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
Nevertheless, we are a bit, encouraged, delighted, and somewhat comforted that such highly troubling report that borders on the reported conducts of two LNP Commanders is being investigated by the authorities of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
That two LNP Commanders assigned in Nimba County, a very strategic part of the Liberian Nation, as it relates to maintaining national security, cross border movement, trade and commerce, among others were allegedly induced by a suspected heartless and coldblooded murderer with ‘Almighty United States Dollars’ to escape justice after gruesomely murdering a woman is not only unimaginable but also disappointing and heartbreaking.
This is why, we, at The INDEPENDENT Newspaper are calling on the leadership of the Liberia National Police (LNP) to leave no stone unturned in its reported ongoing investigation of this crucial matter that borders on how the precious life of a poor and helpless Liberian woman was takeaway.
We, in good faith, also challenge the current leadership of the LNP to speedily probe this matter and make its findings public relative to how Oretha Korwood was dreadfully killed, the whereabouts of the murder suspect, coupled with the roles allegedly played by the two LNP Commanders that reportedly enabled suspect Alexander Mohammed to flee the borders of the Republic of Liberia with his two children.
Such move, we strongly believe, will go a long way in strengthening the much-needed public trust and confidence in the LNP and its personnel including those assigned to Liberia’s multiple cross-border points.
Moreover, the arrest and subsequently prosecution of the suspected murderer of Oretha Korwee and the whereabouts of her two innocent and young children should be fully established aimed at bringing some sense of relief to the Liberian family members of Oretha as they too may have been concerned about their current location and where-being.
