MONROVIA: The Opposition Unity Party (UP), through its National Campaign Team, has alarmed on what it termed as an imminent threat` to the life of its Standard-bearer, Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai, alias, “Rescue 1.”

At a crowded news conference held Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at UP’s National Campaign Headquarters, Airfield-New Road, in Sinkor, Monrovia, UP’s Spokesperson, Mohammed Ali, alleged that the party’s intelligence bureau has discovered that other high-ranking members of the Unity Party “Rescue Mission” are being tracked on the alleged order of incumbent President, George Mannah Weah.

“Rescue Mission Campaign, through its Intelligence Bureau, has now determined that there is an imminent threat to the life of our Standard-bearer from the CDC and its government operatives,” Mo Ali told the news conference yesterday in Monrovia.

On August 28, 2023, former Vice President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. took a break from the campaign tour of Montserrado County for a three-day official visit to the Republic of Ghana.

He explained that minutes after the former Vice President’s Departure, Freedom FM, a radio station, owned by the Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (NSA), announced that Amb. Boakai has been hurriedly flown out of Liberia for emergency medical attention.

“Amb. Boakai, popularly now known as ‘Rescue 1’ departed the Roberts International Airport (RIA) at about 7 AM via ASKY Airline,” Freedom FM was quoted by UP as saying.

According to the official spokesperson, following said pronouncement by Freedom FM, scores of officials of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and other officials of government including Presidential Aide, Sekou Kalasco Damarol and Deputy Finance Minister, Samora P. Z. Wolokolie, flooded social media pages with echoes of Joseph Boakai being sick.

UP: “The Rescue Mission’s Campaign promptly refuted the claims of Sam Siryon’s Freedom FM and the CDC zealots including government officials through a Facebook release by National Campaign Spokesman, Mohammed Ali.”

According to the National Campaign Team of UP, the “unauthorized release” of the CCTV footage of JNB by authorities of the state-owned Roberts International Airport (RIA), is a clear violation of Section 17.40.3 of the Liberia Civil Aviation Regulations, Volume XXI, No. 70. August 11, 2021.

UP noted that the CCTV footage is part of the Passenger Name Record (PNR) of the UP’s Standard Bearer, and it is his privacy.

The party maintains that its Standard-bearer’s right to that privacy was violated by the RIA Management and the Liberian government, through the NSA and its surrogates.

“CCTV footage should only be released to an institution or individuals upon order of a court; More so, the release of the CCTV footage provides sensitive information about JNB’s travel patterns, routines and whereabouts that could be exploited by those with malicious intent,” UP maintained.

Mr. Mohammed Ali further disclosed that once the CCTV footage of UP Standard-bearer was released by the NSA Director, Sam Siryon, the Intelligence Bureau of the Rescue Mission Campaign launched an immediate investigation to determine the motive behind such blatant violation of privacy right.

Mo Ali: “Our intelligence has established that the Government of Liberia, through the National Security Agency (NSA), and other state security agencies and privately hired security groups/individuals have been tracking every movement of the UP-Standard Bearer with the utmost sinister motive. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that government officials and surrogates of the CDC have been planted to propagate that JNB is ‘sick and will die soon’.”

UP Continues that the use of the PNR, which is belongs to the former Vice President and UP Standard-bearer for propaganda purposes has put his life in imminent danger and this must claim the immediate attention of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), the US Embassy, the European Union, the United Nations and all other Diplomatic Missions and International Partners in and out of Liberia.

“The International Community should also take cognizant of the fact that the Weah-led government has sent a clear signal to the rest of the world that no one’s privacy, including international travelers passing through the RIA in Liberia, is guaranteed. Said privacy could be leaked to surrogates of the CDC at any point in time for political or private sinister motives,” he noted.

He said that the incumbent President George Manneh Weah and his supporters have realized that they will massively be defeated in the ensuing October 10, 2023 polls and have allegedly set out to plunge Liberia into another chaos.

“These violations of the privacy of officials of the Rescue Mission,” according to the Unity Party, “are worrisome and now show fear that the government has set out to get at them in the most vicious way.”

The UP also recalled that Monday, August 14, 2023, it announced that Amb. Boakai would have conducted a press conference at the party’s Rescue Center.

According to the opposition party, as the UP Standard-bearer left his residence to proceed to the “Rescue Center” of the party to hold the press conference, the CDC sent its thugs and hooligans to attack the Campaign headquarters.

Mo Ali: “It has now been revealed that the attacks which were ordered by the hierarchy of the CDC with the approbation of President Weah had intended to inflict bodily harms and injuries on the person of former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr.

“Despite massive public outcries and condemnations, the Liberia National Police and the Ministry of Justice deliberately refused to conduct any investigation into the attacks on the campaign headquarters of the Unity Party,” the party indicated.

Mo Ali, at the same time, called on supporters of the Unity Party and other collaborating Parties to continue the campaign unabated as they are doing everything to ensure their safety.

“We will not allow this country to retrogress to war years. We will not allow any amount of threats to cower us into surrendering the elections to state sponsored gangs and looters who are bent on destroying the country,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, the National Campaign Team of the Unity Party, has revealed that its Legal Team is reviewing all of the legal implications associated with the release of the CCTV footage of the UP’s Standard Bearer and will advise appropriately.

Although incumbent President George Weah, could not be immediately reached yesterday for comments on the latest allegations by the Unity Party bordering on the reported threats against the life of the UP political leader, Ambassador Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the Liberian President has consistently said in public forums that he (President Weah), has no any evil intention for Ambassador Boakai, and as such, claims that his government wants to kill him are far from truth.
