For Tragic Vehicle Incident At UP Headquarter: Police Charges Driver With Murder, Others

MONROVIA: The Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice on Capitol Hill has issued a Writ of Arrest on Lawrence Williams, the driver whose vehicle rammed into a large crowd of jubilant supporters of the Unity Party (UP), recently on Broad Street in Central Monrovia, leading to the death of at least three persons and the injuring of 25 others.

Already, the Liberia National Police (LNP), has arrested Williams and sent him to Court on charges of Murder, Aggravated Assault and Recklessly Endangering Other Persons.

The Writ Sheet, dated November 25, 2023, ordered the arrest of the living body of Lawrence Williams to appear before the Monrovia City Court, Temple of Justice Building, Montserrado County, to answer to the charges levied against him.

On Monday, November 20, 2023, hundreds of partisans and supporters of the Unity Party (UP), had converged at the Party’s Headquarters on Broad Street to celebrate after the National Elections Commission (NEC), announced the Standard-bearer of the party, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, as winner of the November 14, 2023 Presidential Runoff election when the incident occurred.

The Liberian National Police (LNP) confirmed the death of three persons and the injuring of twenty-five others who were part of the UP celebration.

The LNP then, launched a preliminary investigation of the incident.

Making the disclosure Tuesday, November 21, 2023, Police spokesman Moses Carter, quoted health authorities at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital as confirming the death of three persons, including two males and a female.

According to the LNP, Williams who has now been forwarded to court for prosecution is a resident of Duport Road Flower-Pot Community in Paynesville.

Few days ago, UP Standard-bearer, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, now President-elect, visited the victims of the incident at the hospital.

He expressed sympathy to the bereaved families, Unity Party, and the Liberian nation. He also assured proper investigation of the incident while pleading with supporters of UP to remain calmed.

Some of the injured persons, according to well-placed medical sources are under intensive care.

In his previous comments to reporters, accused Lawrence Williams attributed the tragic vehicle incident to an accident caused by a faulty brake problem experienced by his vehicle.
