Military Coups Are “Troubling” Speaker Chambers Asserts

House speaker Bhofal Chambers has underscored the need for sustained security structure amongst West African Countries aims at combating terrorism.
According to him, the move when implemented by West African leaders, will abolish the increased level of coups in the region.
Speaker Chambers made the remarks in an interview with Journalists at the Roberts International Airport upon his arrival from the International Round Table Conference at the weekend.
The conference, according to speaker Chambers, was centered on the role of parliament in West African in improving various sectors including security.
Speaker Chambers further described military coups in Mail, Burkina Faso and Guinean as “troubling”, stressing the need for urgent attention to eradicate the menace.

He also emphasized the need for a collective effort in ensuring that West African Countries are self-sufficient in food security.
House Speaker Bhofal Chambers, during the conference, addressed participants at the close of the international Roundtable on Parliaments in Security Sector Governance and Reform in West Africa.

He emphasized the critical need for African nations to convene conferences aimed at finding solutions to the challenges facing the continent.

The event, which was held in Nigeria, was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), a German Political Foundation, in collaboration with the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies.

During his speech on Friday, December 8, 2023, Speaker Chambers highlighted the disadvantages faced by the Global South, emphasizing that 30 percent of resources going to Europe originate from Africa.

He asserted that it is high time for African nations to collaboratively address their issues through conferences that focus on developing indigenous solutions.

The conference, funded by the German Government as part of the German Development partner system, focused on crucial aspects such as strengthening the rule of law, democracy, and good governance, along with supporting security sector reform in Nigeria and West Africa.

Expressing gratitude to the organizer, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Speaker Chambers commended the foundation for its role in facilitating the gathering.
The conference brought together legislators from the West African region to deliberate on the role of Parliaments in security sector governance and reform.
Speaker Chambers emphasized that the conference served as a platform for discussing parliamentary oversight of the security sector and fostering synergy among nations for collaborative efforts toward improved scrutiny of the security sector in the region.
The event underscored the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

Speaker Chambers urged African nations to take the lead in shaping their destinies by finding innovative and homegrown solutions.
