MONORVIA: Amid intense lobbying and behind the scenes discussions, more lawmakers have declared their support for Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, Grand Kru County Representative, for the Speaker Portfolio of the House of Representatives.
Representative Koffa is the current Deputy Speaker of the 54th National Legislature.
Reports say, the majority bloc, comprising old lawmakers and Representatives-elect has pledged its unflinching support to the Grand Kru Representative in a Resolution signed by over 40 lawmakers from fifteen (15) counties of Liberia.

Some legislative analysts on Capitol Hill in Monrovia pointed out that with additional number of Representatives supporting Cllr. Koffa, the United States trained Lawyer and lawmaker is surely heading for possible victory at the polls for the speakership of the 55th Legislature in January, 2024.
The race for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives is in fulfillment of Article 49 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, which provides that “The House of Representatives shall elect once every six years a Speaker who shall be the presiding officer of the body, a Deputy Speaker, and such other officers as shall ensure the proper functioning of the House. The Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and other officers so elected may be removed from office for cause by resolution of a two-thirds majority of the members of the House.”

Rep. Koffa’s camp is reported to have gained two more Representatives who have affixed their signatures to the pro-Koffa documents, thus increasing the number of his supporters from 42 to 44 lawmakers, out of the 73 eligible representative voters in the Lower House.

The additional lawmakers who recently declared their support to Cllr. Koffa’s Speakership campaign are Nathaniel Zoe Bayway, Representative, District#1, Grand Kru County; and Muka Kamara, District#14 Representative, Montserrado County.

Earlier, 42 Representatives-elect said in a Resolution: “We, the undersigned Representatives hereby declare Representative Jonathan Fonati Koffa as Speaker of the House of Representatives and urge our fellow Representatives to support this resolution as a demonstration of our shared commitment to fostering effective and principled leadership within the 55th House of Representatives.”

The Grand Kru District#2 Lawmaker and Deputy Speaker of the 54th Legislature, following the October 10, 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections, and following his decisive victory, declared his intention to contest as Speaker of the House in the upcoming 55th Legislature. Soon, several names emerged.

However, three names have consistently made the headlines. Musa Hassan Bility, Representative-elect, Nimba County District#7 and Chairman of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), and Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon, Montserrado County, are the main opponents to Deputy Speaker Koffa for the Speakership.

Representatives Bility and Koon will be left with the balance lawmakers to share as Koffa has already secured more than 40 Reps in the race.

Cllr. Koffa has served as deputy speaker of the 54th House of Representatives for the past three years.
As Deputy Speaker, Cllr. Koffa is credited for having the ability to work with his colleagues across the aisle to ease the tension that earlier engulfed the House’s chambers in the first two years of the 54th Legislature.
