Under My Leadership: 55th Legislature Will Be Vibrant-Rep Koffa Assures Colleagues of Responsible Leadership

MONORVIA: As the quest for speakership intensifies for the incoming House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature, incumbent Deputy Speaker of the 54th Legislature, and Grand Kru County Legislator, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa (JFK), has assured his colleagues and Liberians in general of responsible and accountable Legislature.
The Grand Kru County District#-2 Lawmaker is vying for the Speakership of the House of Representatives.

In a recent interview with the Voice of America (VOA), based in Washington D.C, United States of America (USA), Representative Koffa assured equitable distributions of resources as contained in the National Budget for the country’s 73 political districts.

He said the resources would be used to address the basic needs of the vast majority of ordinary citizens who currently find themselves at the bottom of the Nation’s economic ladder and have limited opportunities.

“The budget, under our leadership, will be spread across the 73 political subdivisions of our country for the benefits of our constituents, who we represent as lawmakers. This time, the County Social Development Funds will be active, so our people can feel the impact of national development. It will be used to undertake development projects, like roads, schools, health and education facilities etc.,” the legal luminary disclosed.
Pressed whether he will be exonerated from any imposition of sanction in the future by the US Government, he commented: “I have not been involved into any corrupt practices in and out of government.”
Cllr. Koffa has been the deputy speaker of the 54th Legislature for the past three years. As Deputy Speaker, Cllr. Koffa is credited for having the ability to work with his colleagues across the legislative aisles to ease the tension that earlier engulfed the House’s chambers in the first two years of the 54th Legislature.

The Grand Kru County’s respected Lawmaker, and United States (US) trained lawyer, during the interview with the VOA, stated that he has gotten the blessing of his colleagues in the majority bloc.

The Majority bloc comprises elected-lawmakers from the October 10, 2023 Polls.

Reports also have it that the Koffa’s camp has been attracting new recruits including Nathaniel Zoe Bayway, Representative, District#1, Grand Kru County, and Muka Kamara, District#14, Montserrado County.
These two lawmakers affixed their signatures to the list of over 40 lawmakers, out of the 73 eligible voters (Lawmakers), in the Lower House, a situation which suggests that Representative Koffa remains the favorite for the powerful and influential post in the Legislature, which is the First of the three separate, equal, but distinct branches of government. The two are Judicial and Executive branches.

Indeed, Koffa is poised to be elected as the third powerful person in the nation in January 2024.

Apart from the majority bloc’s unqualified support, Koffa’s party’s, the governing Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has endorsed the candidacy of the well-connected Grand Kru County Representative.

In a statement, the CDC said, after extensive internal consultations involving members of the National Executive Committee and the CDC legislative caucus, the party has concluded that, given the thin nature of the election returns, a balanced government regionally and politically, is in the best interest of the Liberian people.
“In this light, the party intends to support its Caucus’s quest for the speaker position and has endorsed the candidacy of Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, a well-balanced political and regional partisan, as its sole candidate for the House Speakership.

“Therefore, we are calling on all independents and like-minded members of the incoming 55th legislators to support Cllr. Koffa as the consensus candidate,” said CDC Chairman Mulbah Morlu.

The Grand Kru District#2 Lawmaker and Deputy Speaker of the 54th Legislature, following his decisive victory in the October 10, 2023 elections, declared his intention to contest as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the upcoming 55th Legislature.
Last week Musa Hansan Bility, Representative-elect, Nimba County District#7 and Chairman of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), and Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon, Montserrado County of President-elect Unity Party (UP), formed an alliance to challenge Cllr. Koffa in January.

Bility said he was withdrawing from Speakership race to join forces with the Koon Camp to democratically fight Rep. Koffa.

The race for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives is in fulfillment of Article 49 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, which provides that “The House of Representatives shall elect once every six years a Speaker who shall be the presiding officer of the body, a Deputy Speaker, and such other officers as shall ensure the proper functioning of the House. The Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and other officers so elected may be removed from office for cause by resolution of a two-thirds majority of the members of the House.”
The elections for Speakership of the 55th Legislature is expected to take place on January 15, next year.
