Totota Town Explosion Dead Hits 52 …12 More Succumb To Injuries; As 89 Others on Critical List

TOTOTA, BONG CO.: President-elect, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has visited the scene of the recent tanker explosion incident which led to the death of at least 52 persons, and injuring of many others in Totota, Bong County.

During the visit, Ambassador Boakai recognized the gravity of the tragic situation and underscored the profound impacts it has on the affected families and the entire Liberian Nation.

On Sunday, December 31, 2023, President-elect, Boakai visited the site of the incident along with family members of the victims.

Totota is situated in Central Liberia, Bong County, with population of approximately 6,400.

During the visit, Boakai participated in a church worship service. The edifice of the church is very close to the site where the tragic incident occurred.

The President-elect and his entourage had engagements with local authorities, emergency responders, and community leaders, as he extended sympathy to the bereaved families.

“We are here today to console you, we are here today to tell you that we feel just as hurt as you are, we will stand with you because this is a family affair,” he noted.

The President-elect also offered condolences to the bereaved families. He then offered prayer for the speedy recovery of other victims, who are currently seeking treatments in various hospitals and other health centers across the country.

At the same time, Ambassador Boakai presented L$10m (ten million Liberian dollars) and two hundred (200-25kg.) bags of rice to the victims` families.

While making the donation, he emphasized the importance of basic education for citizens relative to safety, self-awareness and protection in emergency situations.

He also urged state security forces to conduct a comprehensive investigation as it relates to the cause of the tragic incident and make relevant recommendations aimed at prevention of such ugly situation.

In a related development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and sympathized with the Government and people of Liberia for the irreparable loss.

The regional body, in a statement issued over the weekend, noted that it has received with shock and concern the news of the explosion of a fuel tanker in Bong County that has resulted in scores of fatalities.

ECOWAS prayed for the quick recovery of the injured and commended the Government for the proactive measures being taken to ensure their speedy recovery.

The ECOWAS Commission assured that it stands ready to support on-going measures by the Government to investigate the circumstances of the explosion with a view to preventing reoccurrence of such tragic incidents in the country.

On Thursday, December 28, 2023, a petroleum tanker overturned along a road in Totota Town, Bong County, about 130km (80 miles) from the Capital, Monrovia.

According to eyewitnesses, it burst into flames soon after people rushed to the site to scoop petrol from the tanker.

Speaking over the weekend to the BCC, Liberia`s Health Minister, Dr Wilhelmina Jallah disclosed that the death toll from the petroleum tanker crash and explosion has risen to fifty-two (52) after twelve (12) more people died from their injuries.

The health minister said that some of the bodies were burnt to ashes, as she informed the BBC that about 89 others, who are being treated in hospitals, are in a very critical state.

The cause of the crash is unclear, as video footage shows that a large number of people, including women and children, had gathered around the tanker after it overturned.

Some had buckets and gallons and others were on top of the tanker when it burst into flames.
