MONROVIA: The newly appointed Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, says he will conduct a rigorous employees’ appraisals to identify the strengths and weaknesses that would nexus reshuffle of staff for proper placement.
The EPA is the principal authority in Liberia responsible for the management of the environment including coordinating, monitoring, supervising and consulting with relevant stakeholders on all activities that have to do with protection of the environment and sustainable use of natural resources.
The goal is to manage the resources of Liberia in a way that can benefit the current generation and future generations.

Speaking to cross-section of stakeholders and EPA employees in Sinkor Yesterday, February 19, 2024, Dr. Yarkpawolo insisted that apart from innovation that will make the EPA second to none among other autonomous agencies of government in Liberia, he will not do anything new but to enforce existing policies, laws and regulations.
“We will ensure that all employees have their just and rightful benefits (including salaries that commensurate with qualifications and nature of work) as mandated by the labor law of Liberia and other statutory laws,” he assured.
The new EPA promised to set up a small committee to investigate circumstances that led to the dismissal of one of the entity’s employees by Prof Wilson Tarpeh.
“The outgoing administration dismissed some employees, which seemed to be controversial. We will set up a small committee to investigate circumstances leading to the dismissal of employees. We will act on the committee’s findings and recommendations to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability,” he noted.
Yarkpawolo: “The EPA is a regulator and therefore, it should be an integrity institution. This means that people who work here should have a very high level of integrity. We will therefore employ mechanisms that will ensure a high level of work ethics including coming to work on time, leaving from work on time and tracking employees work activities to ensure proper accountability.”

To ensure the full implementation of the Act creating the EPA, he vowed to recommend to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to constitute the National Environmental Policy Council and the EPA Board of directors, to ensure decentralization of the EPA both at the county and district levels.

He told the gathering that under his watch as Executive Director, they will increase the revenues of the EPA by closing loopholes and enforcing the ESIA guidelines as well as other revenue generation capacities, to make the EPA self-sufficient financially.
Addressing Liberia’s local and international donor partners, Yarkpawolo assured that the EPA will be a force for good not only for Liberia but for the global community.
“To our national and international partners, we are here to assure you that a new day has dawned on the EPA. We promise you that a year from now, the EPA will be a force for good not only for Liberia but for the global community. All we ask is that you be transparent with us as well,” he promised.
