MONROVIA: National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP), Director-General, Dewitt von Ballmoos, has clarified that he has not spoken to any journalists since the Monday the incident occurred at his office.

On Tuesday, several media outlets reported that a team of officials of the government escorted Cllr. Moifee Kanneh to take over as Officer-In-Charge of NASSCORP.

But von Ballmoos hinted that he did not speak to reporters on the matter but read some of the media reports online about the incident which reportedly occurred at his office on Monday. Von Ballmoos is currently out of Liberia on medical leave.

Interestingly, on Monday, March 5, 2024, the Sinkor Compound of the state-owned National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP), was a “scene of political drama” as officials of the new government of President of Joseph Nyuma Boakai reportedly stormed the area, for the purpose of putting Cllr. Moifee Kanneh into office as “Officer-In-Charge” of NASSCORP.

After intense arguments, involving senior staffers of NASSCOP and the Unity Party team led by Chairman Luther Tarpeh, calm was restored following the intervention of the Executive Mansion.

Sources at NASSCORP described the decision by the ruling party to put Cllr. Kanneh into power as Acting Head of NASSCOP, as “cowardly” and “disastrous.”

An insider of government questioned the decision by the UP officials to recognize Cllr. Moifee Kanneh as the new Officer-in-Charge of NASSCORP, as the institution enters a critical week, bordered on what seems to be ‘escalating political crisis.’

The Government insider, who prefers anonymity for administrative reason explained that the current leadership team at NASSCORP has more than three years tenure position.”

The position, the insider said, was inherited from ex-President George Weah’s erstwhile administration.

At the same time, some staffers confided in this paper the Director-General, Dewitt von Ballmoos, is still in full control of NASSCORP, as its Director General and not incapacitated as it is being postulated by critics. von Ballmoos is expected to return to Liberia shortly, the insider hinted this paper.

The UP officials who escorted Cllr. Kanneh to NASSCORP included Senator Prince Moye of Bong County; Senator Gboto Kanneh of Gbarpolu; Commerce Minister Amin Modad and Unity Party Chairman, Rev. Luther Tarpeh.

Also, two officials of the ruling UP maintained that a communication was signed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, recognizing Cllr. Moifee Kanneh as the new Officer-in-Charge of NASSCORP.

Some keen observers opined that the manner in which the folks from the governing UP are ‘hunting for tenure and lucrative positions in government’ is worrisome as several officials, occupying tenure entities have gone to court, seeking legal redress as they claimed blatant violations of their rights.

The current NASSCORP boss has been investing the Corporation’s funds, leading to the construction of the modern Headquarters of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), which is strategically situated at the ELWA Junction.

Under his leadership, NASSCORP also built many complexes around the country including in Grand Bassa and Bomi Counties.

Mr. von Ballmoos is one the nation’s respected corporate leaders who also built an up-to-the-minute medical facility and imported world-class medical equipment that are current being used to treat various sicknesses at generally affordable costs. He also built a modern facility as the home of NASSCORP on 24th Street in Sinkor.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Liberia is expected to make particular decisions for some tenure positions that were affected among the list of reported appointees as announced by the Executive Mansion recently.
