MONROVIA: The Director of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Ansu Dorley, has predicted that heavy rainfall with devastating floods and windstorms will affect many parts of Montserrado County, particularly Monrovia and Paynesville this year.

Dorley issued the grave warning to all residents of Liberia Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Monrovia.
His statement followed a recent downpour of rain that caused significant flooding in areas like Monrovia and Paynesville, forcing many to evacuate their homes.

Director Ansu Dorley emphasized the urgency of taking precautionary measures in disaster-prone areas, urging residents to brace themselves for potential disasters.

The agency is actively coordinating relief efforts with organizations like the Liberia National Red Cross and the Armed Forces of Liberia to assist affected communities.
Director Dorley stressed the importance of keeping major drainages clear and preventing the construction of large structures near waterways to mitigate future disasters.

He also called on government ministries and agencies to ramp up their efforts in disaster prevention, emphasizing that prevention is far more effective than recovery.

He described Monday’s flooding incidents as a tip of the iceberg.

“Heavy rainfall will affect Monrovia this year. What we saw on Monday was just a tip of the iceberg that awaits us this rainy season,” Dorley disclosed.

Though, he didn’t provide any scientific evidence to back his claims but said the agency has begun coordinating relief for people who are affected by the Monday’s flood in Monrovia and Paynesville.
