Gov’t Increases Funding For Higher Education From: US$400,000 To US$1 million

MONROVIA: In a significant move towards advancing the quality of higher education, Executive Director, Edward Wonkeryor, has announced a substantial budget increment for the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) by the Government of Liberia (GoL).

Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press conference yesterday, June 9, 2024, Dr. Wonkeryor disclosed that the increased allocation underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing educational activities and fostering academic excellence in the country.

He explained that the budget increment, aimed at strengthening higher education institutions, from 400,000 United States Dollars, to One million United States Dollars comes as part of the strategic objectives outlined for 2024-2026.

According to him, one of the key focus areas of the initiative is to enhance quality assurance measures in higher education, ensuring that academic standards are upheld and educational outcomes are improved.

The boost in funding is expected to have a positive impact on the overall quality and competitiveness of Liberia’s educational system, he added.

Dr. Wonkeryor pointed out that by investing in higher education, the government is not only empowering students with access to better learning opportunities but also equipping institutions with the resources needed to deliver high-quality education.

“The proactive steps taken by the government to transform the higher education sector are commendable, reflecting a commitment to sustainable national development through education,” he stressed.

According to him, the increased budget allocation for the NCHE signals a promising future for higher education in Liberia, setting the stage for continuous improvement and growth in the academic landscape.
