For Prosecution of ‘Corrupt’ Officials: NPP Backs Boakai …But Questions Recent Deployment of Soldiers At RIA

MONROVIA: While welcoming efforts by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai led Government to prosecute ex-officials who are alleged to be involved in corruption, the former ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned the government against any attempt to cherry-pick individuals for prosecution while shielding others.

The Acting National Chairman of the NPP, Atty. George Mulbah, cautions President Boakai that cherry-picking who to prosecute while shielding others from trial has the potential to cause chaos in the country.
Speaking at a news conference in Monrovia on July 30, 2024, Atty. Mulbah reminded incumbent President Joseph Boakai of the revolt against the erstwhile Government of former President Samuel Kanyon Doe (late), in the 19180s as a result of selective justice during his governance in Liberia.
Atty. Mulbah: “The NPP is also concern about the concentration of the governance of the country from one region and we need to ensure that qualified people irrespective of their political backgrounds, tribal origin, geographical locations, be given equal r5ights to appointments in government.”
NPP also warned the Boakai-led government against “appointing only individuals from Unity Party and Lofa County” in government.

The NPP Acting Chairman, at the same time, expressed concern about the recent deployment of soldiers of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), during the arrival of former President George Manneh Weah at the Roberts International Airport (RIA), in Margi County.
“Let it be made clear that the NPP recognizes the fact that the VIP is for the elected president of this country and only the elected president has the right to use the VIP, But notwithstanding, for the deployment of soldiers just for political gathering , we feel that it is a threat to freedom of assembly and democracy,” he added.
“The AFL, under our laws can only be deployed outside the barracks based on the expressed approval of the President, so based on this background, we are demanding an explanation for the deployment of soldiers at the RIA,” the NPP Chairman emphasized, among other things.
However, it is not clear whether former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor is supporting her party in this direction.
