MONROVIA: Over twenty-eight thousand (28,000) affected flood victims are set to receive monthly stipends from the United Nations through the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) for feeding and personal care during the rainy period.
Ansu Dolley, Director of the NDMA, made the disclosure when he served as a guest during the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism regular press briefing, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.
Director Dolley explained that as a help to fight against flood, the United Nations (UN), has donated one million five hundred thousand to the disaster management team that is being distributed to the flood victims.
He further disclosed that the team is starting with five thousand houses which amount to twenty eight thousands flood victims that will receive forty five (US$45.00) each for the period of four months.
According to him, the money will help these victims redefine themselves and empower them to do things that will keep them up during the period of the rainy season.
At the same time, he explained that such donation will not continue every rainy season due to lack of funding and some flood victims will want to feel entitled to such gesture.
He clarified that to avoid such the NDMA will work with other government entities to demolish houses that have been built in the water ways that are causing flooding to increase every rainy period.
He urged citizens to desist from building in drainages and swap to avoid causing havoc in the country.
Meanwhile he disclosed that the government of Liberia has donated five hundred thousand United States dollars as additional funds to give help to the flood victims.
