MONROVIA: Ahead of this year celebration of United Nations Day, the UN is working closely with the Ministry of Internal Affairs as part of early preparation to take the celebration outside of Monrovia for the first time.
Speaking during a one-day meeting at the One UN House on Tuesday in Monrovia, UN Resident Coordinator, Christine Umutoni, said October 24 of each year is celebrated in Liberia because Liberia is a founding member of the UN.
She added that the purpose of taking the celebration outside Monrovia for the first time is part of promoting government’s decentralization process by taking major activities and services to the people.
The UN envoy said, the day will be celebrated with many activities include the launch of UN joint regional Hub in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.
Madam Umutoni said launching the joint UN regional hub will create access for local services.
The UN Resident Coordinator told the gathering that ahead of October 24, the UN team is expected to pay assessment visit as part of working with MIA to mobilize CSo, local dwellers including civil servants to participate in promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Meanwhile, Internal Affairs Deputy Minister for Research and Planning, Edward K. Mulbah, assured government’s commitment in working with the UN team to ensure that the program is well planned and implemented.
“Government is excited and grateful, these activities remind me of government principles and system in local government activities,” he said.

The MIA deputy minister said government, as a team, stands ready to ensure that the program is successful.
Speaking further on the expected launch of the joint UN hub, Minister Mulbah said the hub is a front line facility that will provide ministerial services between government and the local people.
United Nations Day is an annual commemorative day, reflecting the official creation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945.
In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly declared 24 October, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, to “be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for” its work.
