Recently, the Government of Liberia (GoL), through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formally requested former Presidents Ellen Jonson Sirleaf, and George Manneh Weah, along with Liberia’s Nobel Peace Laureate, Madam Leyma Roberta Gbowee, seeking their individual endorsement for Liberia’s bid for the nonpermanent seat of the United Nations (UN), Security Council.
Fortunately, and rightly for Liberia, its bid for the UNSC seat has been officially endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Liberia is also a founding and valued member.
On September 27, 2024, the General Assembly of the United Nations, at its Headquarters in New York, United States of America (USA), will decide whether or not, the Republic of Liberia should ascend to the UN Security Council seat as a non-permanent member.
The Government of Liberia (GoL), headed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, is aiming to secure the UN Security Council seat, aimed at enhancing the voice of the Liberian Nation in the strengthening and consolidation of international peace and security.
Moreover, Liberia’s bid to ascend to the UNSC seat as a non-permanent member is based on a number of factors including the country’s historic, meaningful, and indelible roles and contributions as a Founding Member of the erstwhile League of Nations, which is now the United Nations (UN).
The quest is also based on Liberia’s wealth of experience in the promotion of World Peace and Security as a result of its previous tenure, among others, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 1961.
The invitation to former Presidents Sirleaf and Weah, along with Nobel Laureate, Gbowee to team up with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai in highlighting Liberia’s positive transformation from a post-conflict state to a Nation which is now playing pivotal role in the consolidation of global peace and security, in our candid opinion, represents a strategic and nationalistic move to further enhance Liberia’s positive and endearing legacy in the global community.
This is why the support of former Presidents Sirleaf and Weah, along with Madam Gbowee and incumbent President Boakai for the UNSC seat aimed at bolstering Liberia’s global standing is not only welcoming but also in the supreme interest of Liberia and World at large.
This is also why, we at The INDEPENDENT newspaper are calling on former Presidents Ellen Jonson Sirleaf and George Manneh, as well as Nobel Laureate, Leymah Gbowee to wholeheartedly embrace the call of the Liberian government by joining President Joseph Nyuma Boakai at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States of America (USA) on September 27, 2024, in firm support of Liberia’s bid for the UNSC seat.
We know that former Presidents Sirleaf, Weah and Nobel Laureate Gbowee as well as incumbent President Boakai are prominent citizens of Liberia at home and abroad, who over the years, have been working assiduously in multiple capacities for the good of the country though, as humans, each of them may not be perfect in their respective services to Liberia and the civilized world.
This is why we think they need to rise to the challenge by supporting the bid of Liberia for the UNSC seat so as to add to the immense contributions of Liberia in sustaining global peace, security and order.
In short, this is our plea to ex-presidents Sirleaf and Weah as well as Nobel Laureate, Gbowee and current President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
