MONROVIA, In an effort to understand the demands of Liberia and reinforce strategic partnership with Liberia, a high power delegation from China National Complete Engineering Cooperation (CCEC), led by Mr. Shi Jianguo, on Wednesday September 25, 2024, visited the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) as part of the ongoing collaboration between the governments of Liberia and the People’s Republic China (PRC).
The visit followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between President Joseph Boakai and the Chinese government, aimed at fostering economic development and infrastructure projects in Liberia.
Welcoming the delegation on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs, Daniel Sando, emphasized the significance of this cooperation for Liberia’s future.
He mentioned that the MOU, signed during President Boakai’s visit to China earlier this year, is a strategic move to bolster infrastructure and development efforts across key sectors of the country.
“Our citizens are very happy and enthusiastic about this partnership. The President has made it clear that this cooperation is a priority, and we are eager to see the positive outcomes it will bring for the country,” he stated.
According to him, the MOU seeks to enhance infrastructure development, trade, and investment between Liberia and China.
He believes that the visit marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between Liberia and China, following several previous initiatives.
Mr. Sando reflects on the crucial role China played in Liberia’s infrastructure development, including projects like the construction of the Ministerial Complex, the renovation of Roberts International Airport, construction of the Annex of the Capitol building, Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC), University of Liberia Fendell campus and educational programs that send hundreds of Liberians to China annually for higher education among others.
For his part, Mr. Shi Jianguo who spoke of the Chinese delegation at MICAT said, the agreement is for the benefit of both the people of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China.
He added that, China aims is to develop practical proposals for key sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, and education that reflect the needs of the Liberian people.
Mr. Shi underscored China’s commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership with Liberia, noting that the cooperation will be mutually beneficial.
“We are committed to making significant contributions to the development of Liberia. We believe this partnership will help generate employment, boost the economy, and improve the lives of the people,” he said.
The delegation will continue consultations with key government agencies over the coming days to finalize the details of the projects outlined in the MOU.
