MONROVIA: About 50 school-going children at the Great Commission Primary School in Chicken Soup Factory, Gardnersville, Monrovia, have benefited from a donation of book bags and copybooks from a group, identified as the Coalition for Youth and Students for Better Liberia (CYSBL).
The bags and books were distributed to the kids on the school campus.
Distributing the items to the kids, the Executive Director of the group, Madam Alexzina M. Wilson said, the Coalition for Youth and Students for Better Liberia is a non-for-profit organization founded in 2015.
Madam Wilson disclosed that the group comprises humanitarians and its aims and objectives are to help the needy and less fortunate people.
She indicated that they hope to see students take their lessons serious. The group sees the initiatives as a sign of encouragement to learn and come to school every day.
Madam Wilson urged the students not to be discouraged because they are orphans who don’t have parents or school materials to take their lesson serious.
“We are not directly related to the students but we still came to help. So the same way we came to help, another organization will also think in that way and come to help. Don’t feel discourage that you don’t have parents or anything to go to school, just keep being focused and believe that God will do it for you,” she stated.
Madam Wilson added that they are not just limited to schools but also reach out to disadvantaged people and others who are in need such as single mothers who can’t afford to take care of their children’s educational needs.
According to her, the group has been in existence since 2015 without external support but it has been helping people.
“So, for this year 2024, this is our first phase of donation to the Great Commission Primary School, here in Chicken Soup Factory. We have been constrained financially,” she added.
The Coalition of Youth and Students for Better Liberia Executive Director also stated that they have decided to embark on the donation process in three counties, Montserrado, Bong, and Margibi.
The Great Commission Primary School is the first school that they have made donation to.
“And, with the help of God, we are targeting another schools in the other counties,” she mentioned.
Madam Wilson asserted that the group will be reaching out with donation to five schools in each of the three counties and 50 students per school will benefit from the process.
She admitted that though the group is constrained financially, it will continue to reach out to people that are in need.
Speaking further, Madam Wilson said the donation of school materials is in line with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s back to school agenda.
“But the President is not in the know of us and that is why we are thinking on meeting him someday to tell him that this is his agenda and we are at the back pushing it probably, it will help with support to reach out to more people,” she noted.
However, she said the cost of the donation is about US$3500.
Madam Wilson continued: “We purchased these materials, copybooks, bags, and pencils by cartoons.
She called on others humanitarians to collaborate and support this initiative to join the Coalition of Youth and Students for Better Liberia.
In response, Mr. Kafa Kamara, Vice Principal for Administration of the school appreciated the group for the initiative.
Mr. Kamara said the donation by the group is a motivation for the children to ensure that they can come to school and learn especially for students whose parents can’t afford to provide school items.
“You have done extremely well for these kids by providing these bags so, they can be able to put their books and pencils in them and have the confidence to come to school,” he said.
He also thanked all those that contributed towards the initiative. They hope that the group will continue to do more of what they have started. Writes Linda Gbartie
