MONROVIA: The Liberia Office of Save the Children International (SCI) has embarked on a sustainability plan with the provision of gristmills to two cooperatives.
The presentation of gristmills is part of SCI’s LEARN II project. LEARN II is the Liberia Empowerment Through Attendance, Reading and Nutrition phase II of the project implementation.

Ceremony to present the gristmills, which took place in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County on October 28, 2024, brought together stakeholders, beneficiaries, Save the Children Liberia regional staff, and Grand Gedeh County Agricultural Coordinator as well as representatives of the two cooperatives.

The two cooperatives that benefitted from the gesture include Lydia’s Field Project and the Sustainable Agricultural and Nutrition Organization (SANO) Incorporated.

The gristmills are part of a sustainability plan of the LEARN II Project.

Accordingly, these cooperatives will increase the production of cassava products including value addition thus increasing income and improving livelihood.

One of the goals of the LEARN II Project is to work with five cooperatives in Grand Gedeh and River Gee counties to buttress its hot meal for 95 school using Local and Regional Procurement (LRP) Commodity.

This will also make the cooperatives financially independent to support the education of their children through the provision of home-grown school feeding program.

LEARN II is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded project under the McGovern-Dole International (MGD) Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.

It is implemented by Save the Children, Mercy Corps, and Kawadah Farms in four counties of Liberia.

The project focuses on improving the literacy of school-age children, increasing the use of good health and dietary practices, and improving the effectiveness of food assistance through Local and Regional Procurement (LRP).
