MONROVIA: The Government of Liberia and the United States Government have signed a US$114.4 million agreement in funding for development initiatives in Liberia. The initiatives were designed to enhance economic growth by fostering reform and cultivating a healthy and educated workforce in Liberia.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Government of Liberia, represented by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).

A release from the United States Embassy in Monrovia disclosed that since the original signing of US$640 million five-year Development Objective Agreement in May 2020, USAID has provided annual funding to advance Liberia’s development priorities.

According to the release, to date, US$489.9 million has been committed under the agreement, including this year’s addition of US$114.4 million.

The release also stated that the Minister of Finance, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, U.S. Ambassador Mark Toner; and Mission Director, Jim Wright, announced the agreement which represents a major contribution to Liberia’s development.

American Ambassador, Mark Toner in a statement on the signing of the agreement indicated that the agreement is additional investment which is designed to support Liberian-led interventions in health, education, strategic reforms and market-driven inclusive economic growth.

Ambassador Toner highlighted that through these funds, USAID programs help to provide training for teachers, deliver health commodities to communities, and expand access to electricity in Liberia.

He emphasized that by working together, the U.S. Government and the Government of Liberia aim to ensure that every dollar contributes to lasting, positive outcomes for the Liberian people.

These funds align with mutually established goals to strengthen Liberia’s institutions, improve economic resilience, foster inclusive growth, strengthen the foundations of good governance, increase access to education and improve the health of the Liberian people.

For his part, Minister Ngafuan indicated that the American Government has always stood by Liberia side as a strong partner in progress.

“We are grateful for your support and remain committed to working together,” Minister Ngafuan said, calling for a strengthened partnership to advance Liberia’s agenda.

This partnership highlights the enduring ties between the United States and Liberia and underscores both nations’ commitment to impactful, sustainable progress. Writes Linda Gbartie
