MONROVIA: On International Human Rights Day, the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has launched a powerful campaign to bring attention to the persistent human rights violations that plague the nation.

This year’s theme focused on the critical need for transparency and accountability in governance, as Liberia continues to grapple with the shadows of its tumultuous past.

In a press conference held in Monrovia, Tuesday, December 10,2025, CENTAL’s Executive Director outlined the organization’s commitment to advocating for the rights of all Liberians, particularly marginalized communities who often bear the brunt of systemic injustices.

The director highlighted that despite some progress since the end of the civil war, many citizens still face significant challenges, including corruption, lack of access to justice, and inadequate healthcare and education services.

“Human rights are not a privilege; they are a fundamental part of our humanity,” the director stated. “We must hold our leaders accountable and ensure that every Liberian can enjoy their rights without fear of discrimination or violence.”

The organization emphasized the importance of citizen engagement in advocating for change, urging individuals to speak out against injustices and demand accountability from their leaders.

As part of the observance of International Human Rights Day, CENTAL is organizing a series of community forums across the country. These forums aim to educate citizens about their rights and the mechanisms available for reporting violations.

Additionally, they will feature discussions with human rights activists, legal experts, and representatives from various civil society organizations, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing human rights issues.

Moreover, CENTAL is calling on the government to take immediate action to strengthen legal frameworks that protect human rights and to implement policies that promote equality and justice.

They are advocating for the establishment of independent bodies to investigate allegations of human rights abuses and to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.

The campaign also highlights the importance of international support and solidarity in the fight for human rights in Liberia. CENTAL urges the international community to remain vigilant and to support local efforts aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights.

As the day unfolds, CENTAL’s message resonates across the nation: the fight for human rights is a collective responsibility that requires the participation of every citizen.
