MONROVIA: In a rather proactive move to enhance the integrity and professionalism of its ranks, the Liberia National Police (LNP), has launched a rapid substance and drugs testing program for over 100 officers of the Police Support Unit (PSU).
The initiative, which began on Friday, December 13, 2024, in collaboration with the Madina Laboratory and Diagnostics Center, aims to create a drug-free environment within the police force, thereby reinforcing public trust.
The program’s primary objective is to identify and address substance use among officers while providing necessary support for those who may be struggling with addiction.
Joe Daweah, Administrator of Madina Laboratory, stated that the initiative not only focuses on testing but also includes comprehensive follow-up support, including psychosocial assistance for officers who may be tested positive. This dual approach underscores the LNP’s commitment to the well-being of its personnel.
Deputy Commissioner Fitzgerald T. M. Biago, Chief of Human Resources for the LNP, emphasized the holistic nature of the initiative.
“A drug-free police force is crucial for the effective and trustworthy performance of our duties,” he said.
“This testing is aimed at supporting our officers while maintaining the highest standards of conduct,” Biago added.
Currently, the test is focused on PSU officers, with plans to broaden the program to include patrol officers who are in direct contact with the public.
This expansion reflects the LNP’s dedication to ensuring that all officers engaged in maintaining public safety are held to the highest standards.
The LNP’s drug testing initiative is a significant step towards fostering a culture of accountability and transparency within the police force.
By addressing substance use head-on, the LNP aims to enhance public confidence in its ability to uphold the law and protect the community.
