MONROVIA: The Press Union of Liberia says all is now set for the World Press Freedom Day Celebration in Monrovia under the theme: “Journalism in the face of Environmental Crisis.”

Each year, May 3 is globally celebrated as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness on the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duties to respect and uphold the rights to freedom of expressions as enshrined in Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The PUL will commemorate this year’s event with a formal indoor program, and climax it with an outdoor program that will include both kickball and football games between the Liberia National Police and the Media at the Invincible Sports Park, in Monrovia.

2024 World Press Freedom Day observance will be held in the Auditorium of the University of Liberia’s Main Campus on Capitol Hill.

The Union has selected one of the brightest sons of the country to serve as guest speaker for the event.

Meanwhile, the Union calls on all its members to assemble by 9am at its Headquarters on Clay Street to begin the parade on to the UL Capitol Hill Campus.

At the global front, Paris-based Reporters Without Borders says 100 active journalists have been killed so far in the Gaza war, while others are killed and detained in Russia/Ukraine war, as well as in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

This year, UNESCO and the government of Chile are hosting the World Press Freedom Day Global Conference. The theme is “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis.”
The conference will focus on the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis.

The global commemorative conference aims to highlight the significant role played by the press, journalism, access, and dissemination of information to ensure and secure a sustainable future that respects the rights of individuals and their diversity of voices, as well as gender equality.
The conference will be held May 2 to 5 in Santiago, Chile.
